Don’t feel terrible, you will be fine. This article is confused about encryption, and god selective about facts to make its case. No software is perfect, and Zoom is working very hard to improve in the areas where it has had problems. They’ve just had a massive increase in users and media attention, which their competitors have not had to face. See their post at https://blog.zoom.us/wordpress/2020/04/08/update-on-zoom-90-day-plan-to-bolster-key-privacy-and-security-initiatives/ for details of what they’re doing.
That being said, for 1:1 meetings there are lots of options to try – Apple’s FaceTime has very good encryption, and there are Signal, Wire, Telegram etc. whose services are free and very much privacy focused.
Good luck!
